What is Public Relations?
Public relations is how companies communicate with their audience; similarly to how an advertisement promotes a product, public relations promotes a company. The public relations field is expanding as more companies are looking into public relations, the definition of a "company" is shifting, and new modes of communication are being developed. Public relations is more than generic office work. It is a field where creative skills like writing and media production are combined with communication skills in order to promote something important. What is PRSSA?
In 1967, 20 years after its own establishment, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) founded the Public Relations Student Society of America. PRSSA is a global pre-professional organization for higher education students who are interested in the public relations career field. The mission of PRSSA is "to provide exceptional service to our members by enhancing their education, broadening their professional network and helping launch their careers after graduation." Currently, there are over three hundred PRSSA chapters, with thousands of active members.
Our Chapter
Here at the University of Delaware, our PRSSA tries to give students opportunities that they won't get in class. Students who join our organization can expect to network with professionals and learn all about the industry, develop new skills through application based learning, and get involved with a community of public relations enthusiasts. Besides career advancement, PRSSA provides opportunities for leadership, connection with other students, and exciting new experiences.
